City perspective

Architecture in Dubai

A regional design reading by Anas Aboalbosher Alahmad, architect based in Dubai.

Dubai is a fast-moving global city where density, climate, hospitality and ambitious mixed-use development meet. Its architecture is influenced by intense sun, high summer temperatures and periods of coastal humidity, as well as by high-rise districts, villa neighbourhoods, waterfront communities and rapidly evolving mixed-use centres.

Environmental priorities

Shade, controlled daylight and durable envelope design should shape massing and planning early.

Urban relationships

Buildings contribute through edges, entrances, ground floors and their relationship with movement.

Identity without imitation

A contemporary response can learn from Gulf traditions, shaded courtyards and contemporary metropolitan life by carrying forward spatial knowledge rather than copying decoration.
